Herstory - Who Was Tamara?
Tamara's House is named in memory of Tamar, a victim of sibling incest, who lived about 3000 years ago and, like so many victims today, never received justice.
According to the story in the Hebrew scriptures (2 Samuel 13:1-22), Tamar, "the beautiful sister of Absalom," was raped by her half-brother Amnon. She then"lived in Absalom's house, a desolate woman." Her father, King David of Israel. was furious when he learned of the rape, but took no action against Amnon. David's failure to act justly led to further tragedy.
The need for a place like Tamara's House is as important today as it was 3000 years ago. We honour Tamar's memory and all women who have been affected by child sexual abuse.
